Report of boat club meeting Mar 18th
26 members attended 4 new members joined
Martin gave us the good news that the model boating lake at Wicksteed is filled and ready for sailing. He announced that Model Mayhem will be back in Wicksteed again this year and there is a page on the web site just for the mayhem event. www.wicksteedparkmbc.co.uk/mayhem.html
Maurice Goodwin entertained us with a DVD of the preserved Norfolk Wherry "Albion". This gives the history of the foundation of the Norfolk Wherrie Trust, and their dogged determination to preserve one of the Werries as a working freight boat. This was quite an interesting film, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Colin Waddoups entertained the meeting to some indoor helicopter flying, having two machines in action.
Some Model Boats Present - The submarine was a work in progress
"Akula" Submarine - by Gerry Rudd
Gerry gave an account of his model of Akula, a nuclear Russian sub of the late 1950, the prototype of this model is believed to have been commissioned in 1960. Gerry fully described the working of the model, along with modifications he made to improve its performance, which includes the fitting of an extra servo to give more control over diving etc. This quite a nice kit and shall be a delightful model when completed. The model is built from a kit, and is 33" in length with a 4" beam, making for a nice model for transporting to the waterside.
Gerry also gave us an account of what it was like to be a sub mariner in the 1950's Royal Navy, having spent 12 years in submarine service, he also told us of his recent visit to see the latest modern submarine.
Report by Patrick O'Sullivan
This is just a short newsletter to let everyone know that the boat club has been offered a new venue for our monthly meeting. The church hall is okay but a Tuesday night isn't good for a lot of people, including those who are members of Northampton club. The new venue is The Warren pub, Stamford Road/Windmill Avenue junction, Kettering, NN16 8FD. One of the bars will be solely for the use of the boat club. We know that not everyone wants to meet at a pub, but there is no cost to the club and soft drinks, tea and coffee etc will be available, together with a small buffet.
The meeting this month will still be held at the church on the 29th. The first meeting at the pub will be on May 12th (Monday). We hope that everyone will make an effort to try out the new venue so that we can make the decision whether we want to meet at the Warren on the second Monday of the month, or the existing dates at the church.
The dates at the church do vary during the year, whilst the meeting at the pub would be on the second Monday of every month. We also have the opportunity to meet twice a month if we want to.
There is a good carpark there with everything on the level for those who struggle to walk. There is also widescreen TV in the pub which we can use to show DVD's, videos etc.
Hope you will be at the church on the 29th April (7.30) and at the pub on the 12th May.
